I second what Craig said, SU's in good condition with working chokes work really well when it comes to starting in cold weather. I live in Portland, and my car is instantly driveable with the SU's and the chokes pulled out, even on the coldest morning.

It's not uncommon for the choke cables to be slipping where they are clamped under the dashboard, the vinyl jacket of the cable gets compressed and the clamp needs to be tightened to compensate.

I actually just fabricated a new set of choke cables for my sedan; I found some stainless steel wire of the right gauge, and got some teflon lined cable from the bicycle shop. Boy, that new bicycle cable sure is better than what was on the car before; the choke mechanism is silky smooth now.
