Sounds to me like your battery might be dying :-)
Yea... check the choke of course. Also though... overall tune of the car. Proper ignition timing makes a huge difference with cold starting. The recommendation of lighter oil for cold temperatures is also good.
These old Volvos can be rather warm blooded... but barely below freezing should not be a problem. -10°F... yea. -20°... most definitely.... though in proper tune, good battery, chokes properly working... they'll start fine even then.
If your battery is of unknown age, looks oldish.. it may well be headed south.
