Hello,
The 1970 142 is running quite well now, but just one nagging problem: if I let it sit for a while (over 10 hours or so), it is really troublesome to start. Sometimes as I keep trying to start it, the battery will run down too far and I'll have to re-charge it. If I get it started just once, I can turn it off and on with ease on the first try. The ignition system currently is pretty much stock (Flamethrower coil and Pertronix only mods) and seems in good shape and the carb and choke work well. The oil is 10w 40. The starter turns over fine. According to the archives, the ignition system is kinda the Achille's heel of old Volvo's. Are these cheap "upgrades" worth looking into?
1. Bigger\better battery (currently a Motorcraft "economy")
2. HEI conversion (from Chevys)
3. "Pulse" spark plugs (saw ad in last Road & Track)
4. SAE 5w30 oil.
5. ???
Thanks!
