For me, switching from my stock distributor to the Bosch electronic set up on a 1975 240 series made a HUGE difference in cold weather fire up. You need the distributor, the ECU and the resistor. The distributor is a bolt in and the wiring is easy. Have you checked that your carbs aren't flooding the motor after shut down?
