What's your fuel pressure when cranking? You should have around 2 psi.
How do you know the carbs (what kind?) and choke are well? No leaks?
10W-40 might be heavy for below 20~F weather. I use 10W-30 and find it decent to -10~F or so.
I think around 500 CCA from the battery is needed, but even a weak battery can get you going if other items are in order.
If "pulse" spark plugs are needed, you've got something else wrong.
I have used Pertronix for over 100,000 miles and through 11 winters without fail. No idea what a "Flamethrower coil" is. Mine is just the stock 38 year old coil. Also don't remember hearing that the ignition system is the no good. It really is pretty basic and works well with points too, although points do need more "maintenance" than electronic ignitions. Are you getting a strong spark from the coil when cranking?
Any idea what the compression is?
