Hall Effect Sensor 200 1986

I replaced the Hall effect sensor in my 86 240 (B230F engine) Bosch distributor.
When installing the new one I got some metal shavings stuck on the magnetic pickup. Without thinking I used a magnet to clean them off.
I now get no spark out of the coil (no low signal from ICU).
When I make and break the contacts B and C out of the distributor plug with a jumper wire I get a spark out of the coil. This is the same condition that caused me to change the hall sensor. Engine does rotate distributor shaft.
Did I ruin the new sensor? Or do I have some real tricky problem?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
