Bad Tach Or Bad Sensor ?? 700

1988 740GLE wagon auto AW70L tranny.. Tachometer rpm's reading too high. For example : 1250 rpm at idle and 3000 rpm at 50 mph. So how do I know if the tachometer is bad and should be replaced or if the sending sensor is bad and needs replacement ? I took off cluster and removed tach. It looked fine. I made sure all connections were solid when putting back together. Where is the sending sensor ? Hard job to replace ? Thanks.
