You can avoid that sort of drama with the lifters by simply removing them before you pull the cam. They can't fall downward into the oil ban with the cam in the way. Once all 8 are out, pull the cam out.
I once to a small pair of needle nose vice grips and cut little notches near the tips so they'd lock onto the top lip of a stock lifter. That let me pull and turn enough to pull some stubborn slightly mushroomed lifters out of their bores.
They don't typically mushroom like that, until a lobe goes flat on them. But of course, that's usually when you are swapping the cam!
