I made up a small notched adaptor for my impact puller, type sold cheaply for pulling dents. Used a small piece of 90ยบ angle welded to a nut which fitted the threaded end of the puller shaft. The notch has to be a precise fit to the groove in the lifter. Push the fitting into the lifter notch and screw the rod down on to the top of the lifter and bump the puller upwards. I agree that what stops them coming out easily is a ring of carbonised oil just above the cam. This all gets scrapped off and drops into the sump or will be washed there by new oil so a quick oil change after you've broken in the new cam is a good idea. New cam means new followers/lifters as well. New cam will be ruined if you use the old ones. 20-30 minutes at 2000rpm with no breaks to run in the new cam.
