hello larry,
getting to the solenoid is a little tricky because of the small room you have to get to it.
you will need to remove the shift top, lift the cover off and away from the shifter for more room.
the solenoid is at the rear right side.
now, i am not sure exactly what is all in there since the previous owner did some things in there. i bet his solenoid died and all he did was to break the plastic gear selector. i didn't have to press the button to shift gears.
i replaced the gear selector which fixed the shifting problem.
this is the way i overroad the solenoid. remember, you are overriding a safety feature which many people do not recommend.
to override the solenoid, i took out 2 parts.
1) the yellow plastic thing. it's attached to the plastic gear selector by a circular clip.
2) i also removed the black plastic thing that is next to the plastic gear selector. lift up above the solenoid pin and pull towards you then up and out. this thing is between the metal and the plastic gear selector.
i could have pulled the solenoid out and replaced it (i didn't check to see if it worked, i think it doesn't), but i chose to pull the above parts instead.
i did this just yesterday.
my wife has the camera on a trip at the moment.
write back if you get stuck.
regards,
byron golden
