Just let it sit for a while (like half an hour) and check the filler hole, even if you filled it from the top. The oil should have drained into the OD unit by then. Actually, it takes much less time, but waiting that long will make you feel better. If no oil comes from the filler hole, add some more till it does. Let any excess drain out. Overfilling does no good. And, yes, get a manual. It will make working on the car much easier and it's a marvelous soporific when read in bed. ;-)
