do it yourself alignment 200 1993

I worked in the shop of a Renault/Peugeot dealership for three years and the alignment equipment consisted of a piece of string and a carpenter's level (a short one)---here's how to do it on a level surface (you can adjust camber and toe--camber first) -- roll car straight back and forth a foot or two (don't worry about the steering wheel alignment at this point) to get the steering and suspension settled. Use the level placed against the the rear of each tire (level held vertically) so it bridges the top and bottom (staying away from the bottom tire bulge but not so far back that it doesn't make a bridge. Note the position of the bubble in the sight glass and then draw the top or bottom away to make the bubble centered. If you need to draw it away at the top you have negative camber--if you have to draw it away at the bottom you have positive camber--you'll want to see up to about a quarter inch gap at the bottom between the level and the tire for a reasonable amount of positive camber. Do that for each side--making them even. Now for the toe-in --- again roll the car back and forth but this time center up the steering wheel as you do so. Place a jack stand or other heavy object behind each rear wheel in turn--placing it behind and a little inboard. Tie a piece of string (long enough to reach the front wheels) low on the anchor object and then draw the string to the front wheel--you want to hook it on the back edge of the rear tire just above the tire bulge and swing it in towards the front tire--if that side has toe-in the string will hit the back of the front tire first--toe-out will show by the string hitting the front first--the amount of gap is pretty much what the toe-in/out is set at. Adjust your tie rod accordingly and then move to the other side and repeat the process. If the steering wheel is way off at the start of the toe adjustment (let's say radical difference in toe right to left) then ignore the steering wheel position and just roll the car straight back and forth--do the toe adjustment and then reset the steering wheel to center while on your road test (bring a 1 and a sixteenth inch socket, extension and ratchet along) by loosening the securing nut (leave it on a few threads) wiggle the wheel side to side pulling up at the same time--when it "pops" remove the nut, pull the wheel off the shaft, recenter it and reinstall the nut. Hope this explains the process well enough. Good luck.
