Do now know what kind of access you have, but if you do, pull the starter off the car and get it tested at your local auto house. They can sort out solenoid or motor windings with their tester.

But you can pull the yellow blue wire off and install a spade lug on a wire there. If you touch the end of the wire to 12 volts the starter should start cranking away. Use a single pole double throw switch if you have one laying around. I used an old seat heater switch and wired it from the starter terminal and tied the other side to the battery.

Just had the excellent fortune to purchase a defective rebuilt starter a couple of weeks ago. Had a dragging starter and a couple of no starts so decided to replace it. After the new one did not crank at all, started trouble shooting and found out that there was a corroded ground wire from the block to the battery. Still could not get the new one to turn over and tried that test. But nothing at all.

Put the old starter back up in there and it cranked away when you hit the terminal with 12 Volts. Ended up leaving the old one back in and taking the other one back.

Love taking that top nut loose two times in one day.
