Don't you wish now that you had stuck a 740GL emblem on it years ago......

The designation of these cars is very confusing. Here it is as well as I can figure it out:

Up to and including 1988, all 740s were GLEs (unless they were Turbos) and all I've ever seen had leather, a sunroof and alloy wheels. However, the sunroof could be either manual or electric. (For example, I have had two cars that were essentially identical--silver wagons with red leather interiors, the 87 had a manual sunroof, manual mirrors and did not have ABS. The 88 had an electric sunroof, electric mirrors and ABS. Both were badged GLE)

For the 1989 model year, the 740GL was introduced. It had cloth seats, steel wheels and a manual sunroof. These cars usually didn't have ABS, but I have seen one with an air bag. The 89 GLE had all the power options, including ABS, plus the 16V B234 engine.

1990 was the year of the restyled front end. There were three model designations: GLE, same as 89 with all power and the 16V engine. Curiously, these were available with either cloth or leather; GL, ABS, leather interior and manual sunroof. 740 (no letter), no ABS, cloth interior and (usually) no sunroof. All 90s had a driver air bag.

91 was the year of the new-style dash. The 16V GLE was dropped from the line, replaced by the 940SE. Unfortunately, I haven't seen a enough of these cars to know how they were badged. I would assume that it would be similar to 90, with leather/sunroof cars being a GL. The same is true of 92---I don't know for sure.

By 94 it gets even more confusing. I have seen a car with cloth seats, no sunroof, and a Turbo under the hood, badged simply "940"

I think Ryan R's suggestion to get a printout from the dealer is a good one, assuming it shows the designation you are trying to prove.,
