I agree: same car.

Though, the special Volvo VIN print out has all sorts of stuff in it, not just a simple "decode" of the VIN digits. It's basically, the car's birth certificate. The car's original configuration is all in there... transmission, key codes, stereo codes... and even though the badges change, Volvo's internal number remains the same. For example, our '91 740 wagon is in there as a "745"... though I can't recall if the "GL" was on there.
