As I recall, it made sense to me to remove the nut ....

re: "...PROBLEM ... was getting it to go over the bolt, and into the pulley at the same time.... Finally I got it just a bit on the bolt, and wedged a bit into the pulley. Then I tapped in place with a hammer. It messed up the top side of the bolt on the tensioner, but the nut fixed all that, remaking the threads when put back on...."

I also have the crank-holding tool from IPD. Did you remove the nut, or try to fit the tool over the small part of the bolt above the nut? It seemed to me to remove the nut (the tensioner won't fly off by itself), leaving more of the bolt exposed for the tool to slip onto. I have had no trouble fitting the tool the way it should.
