I did remove the nut..

Yes, I removed the nut.

I kept looking at it and thinking that there must be a way to move the tensioner so the bolt would be lower, thus fitting easily into the top hole of the tool. Since I was was not going to replace the tensioner or belt on this go round, I was fearful of breaking something, so I did not press or pry too hard on the tensioner.

In the end the tensioner did not move, and I ended up using the hammer. It may be a poorly made tool. It did not come from IPD, and I noted it was made in an unexpected country when I opened it ...Pakistan, I think.
