Before you go to the mechanic, read the codes thrown off by the check engine light. If you open the hood you'll see a little rectangular black plastic box. It's near the driver's side, close to windshield. There is a simple procedure for reading the codes that could tell you the cause. Go the the FAQ section of this web site and it will explain it in detail. It is not difficult.
