my experience is that most of the generators out there are just worn out... worn commutators, so not really rebuildable. So yea... go for the alternator.

But, if you're doing the conversion, I'd say go with a delco... Ron has already helped you out with this or that.. Help him out by buying one of his delco conversion kits. I haven't tried it myself, but based on what I have tried, and his experience and expertise.. I'm sure the kit is top notch.
