For me, the alternator upgrade was one of those "quality of my driving experience" enhancements.

It's not something you absolutely need to do (provided your generator is working), but it sure is nice to drive with out the amp light glowing, and with out the headlight brightness depending on how fast the engine is revving.

I should probably add that I'm not a complete "purist" when it comes to my 122. I've made several upgrades that are not stock, but for me they have improved the driving experience, which is what it's all about in my book.
