For the backup light switch (assuming an automatic trans) try to check for voltage at the proper connector (at the bottom left corner of the center console).

If there's voltage, clean the switch per Art's excellent instructions, and that should get you online again. The switch comes out really easily, four screws and maybe a zip tie.
Last weekend I figured I'd fix the same problem in our 1987 240 simply by just replacing the switch with the new $20 aftermarket one. After endlessly fiddling with trying to push the *fat* connector through the *skinny* space under the carpet, I thought I was finally there. I pulled the old switch apart, and it was indeed pretty ugly inside, so I was comfortable that the new switch would do the job. The wife and the mother in law stood behind the car for the big moment, and...... drumroll..... car in reverse, and.... nothing! No! no! NO!
Everything was adjusted right, and the bulbs are good. My problem is somewhere else. Back to the drawing board. :-)
