Steve,
The "Service Engine" light comes on at pre set intervals to remind you to change oil etc. It can be turned off by pushing in on a recessed knob on the instrument panel. There is also a Check Engine light that comes on when there is a problem with the engine and can be diagnosed with the OBD in the engine compartment. If you are new to all of this there is a wealth of knowledge on this site in the 700/900 FAQ. Briefly, if I were you I would check all the tune up items as well as vacuum hoses and ground connections. Intermittent no starts are often due to a failing RPM sensor located on the bell housing above the flywheel and plugged into the harness at the firewall.
Good Luck,
Len
