ok, after reading the faq's and everyones post, i am leaning toward it being the rpm or crank position sensor......one more question about this: would this condition, first noticed,turn on the service engine light, and continue to work for a while, be a "sometimes it works,sometimes it don't problem? i am going to take the car to a non-volvo mechanic & tell him to replace this part. Volvo specialist are few & far between here
