Sounds like the float levels are too high, or else the main jet orifices are oval. To achieve a correct idle mixture you are jamming the jets up against the piston nearly, or onto the straight section of the needle profile. Excess fuel pressure may be the cause, or leaky float valves, but I'd check the levels and the orifices.
