Good points. Personally, I have not seen an amp for the rear speakers in an 86. I have seen them dealer installed in a 90 behind the glove box, and in a 92 factory installed behind the cubby hole at the bottom of the center console stack.
The vast majority of modern head units use thermally protected amplifier modules for the speaker amps, if they get too hot due to a speaker resistance that is too low, they shut down until they cool off, ie. no long term permanent damage.
