Hello,


Your head gasket is likely compromised. The vapor pressure of the coolant should have been close to atmospheric pressure. The additional volume of gas came from the combustion chamber.

The car can be run during an emergency with the cap loose. Without an exit for the intruding gases, hose, valve, radiator, and heater core failure may result.
