More dummy questions - very long 120-130 1967

Howdy,

Where do I find new wiper blades, 11 inches?

Advance Auto Parts had them on the rack at a store I visited in Houston. They are used for various rear window wiper applications. Realistically, patronize Swedish Treasures or your favorite vintage Volvo supplier for the correct wiper blades.

What kind of oil should I be using?

Whatever you wish. 10W30 works just fine. Modern oils are really good. I understand that some additive (zinc?) has been removed from modern oils and that it plays havoc with certain bronze and brass bushings. I have not had any problem using Castrol 10W30 in the winter and 10W40 in the summer.

Can I use Mann oil filters that I have left over from the 164 - V70?

Yes.

I haven't pulled the distributer cap yet. If it has points, what is the gap?

.018" rough set. Final is 60º dwell.

How do I check out the rear brakes to see if they are working, besides waiting until winter?

You can put it on jack stands and see if they will stall the engine. If they do, they are working. Better is a spirited drive along a gravel or dirt road. You can feel not only the brakes but any odd handling in the bushings/shocks/setup by sliding to a stop while turning the car.

There are no instrument lights.

None as in no lighting for the gauges only? Or, as in no OIL, GEN, TURN, HIGH BEAM? If nothing is working you need to check the wiring. I will assume you meant the instrument lighting bulbs.

All are bayonet mounted. The indicator lights are the same except for the OIL light is higher wattage and zenon. The gauge lighting consists of three bulbs mounted from the back. The indicator bulbs are mounted that way too. You can easily reach all of them from underneath.

For explanations of the dimensions and ratings see www.donsbulbs.com.
The cheapest source I've found for these bulbs is www.bulbtown.com

Could I just use some sealing caulk around the windshield rubber to keep some of the rain out of the cabin.

Do NOT use any "RTV" sealer or any caulking product that smells like vinegar; it will attack the paint and worsen the problem. Use only Butyl rubber sealer meant for the job. It applies with a caulking gun. Google "butyl rubber sealant" for your best source.

Does the drain for the fresh air vent get clogged? How do I check it out to see if it is blocked?

Yes it does. If you pull the blower motor you will see how to deal with the large drain. There is also a smaller drain hose at the base of the heater assembly. It is tight against the floor and difficult to deal with but impossible to deal with from under the car. Also, pay attention to the heater control valve; it may be leaking too.

Mr. Shannon DeWolfe -- I've taken to using mister because my name misleads folks on the WWW. I am a 53 year old fat man. ;-)
