This is Macpherson Strut and what you see is a steel tube . There is a strut insert which sits in that tube and is replaced. Not a bad job to do If you have something for that top nut and a spring compressor (can be borrowed at advance auto). This is the right time to upgrade to stiffer springs(may be lowering springs also a front usually is pointing up) otherwise ride will not change much just with strut change. KYB is cheap and good brand for struts. The rubber boots also will be in need of replacement .Check end links also as they are right there. There are probably tons of posts about strut replacements here on the board and tbricks. eeuroparts and fcpgrotton are good suppliers on east coast.
