Shocks are for the rear, strut inserts for the front. However, the strut insert is a shock absorber as well, so many people just call it a shock. Watch what you're buying.

Struts are intimidating the first time. Took two days my first time. Now I can knock the job out in about an hour per side. Bentley has good instructions for the struts. It's not a bad job, but much easier with a helper, trust me.
