Thanks for the responses.

I'm inclined to act like HAL and let the unit fail on its own... But I don't relish the chore of removing that upper bolt (I don't have an air impact wrench). Am about to take my Brick into a mechanic to have front end work done and so was wondering if I might have him put in a new starter at the same time. We'll see...
