I purchased my alternator conversion kit from Ron Kwass and installed it in my apartment complex parking lot, with little light, and basic hand tools. Fired up on the first try and I haven't had to revisit it since.
A basic multimeter and a timing light are the only real electronic-related diagnostic tools I own, neither of which I had to take out for the alternator conversion. There are no shortage of inexpensive, perfectly suitable multimeters on Amazon. If there was one feature I wish mine had, it would be audible indicators for continuity.
