I agree that the 98's are the best year for S/V70's. Mechanical throttle, no VVT, good tranny etc. They are simpler and basically are 850's renamed. That doesn't mean, however, that the 99 and 2000's can't be good cars. I know many people that have had good luck with those years. Particularly with the 2000 models. One has over 200k on it...
I've been reading the AWD as well as the RWD boards for years and it is my understanding that some 2000's got the 4 speed automatic and others got the 5 speed automatic. Okay - I just researched this. The 2000 base models got the 5 speed automatic. The GLT/turbo models got the 4 speed automatics. I believed that Ford owned Volvo by the year 2000 so I seriously doubt they used a GM tranny. The 5 speed is most likely a Ford or an Aisan-Warner tranny. I will check later on this...
Personally, I'd only buy a NA with manual tranny or a turbo if I bought a model year 2000 car. Avoid the 5 speed slushbox...:)
