I'll second Johns opinions on 1800's. Yes, they are beautiful, but really just a heavier 122 that are much harder to work on. (everything is very tight in the engine compartment and under the dash...in comparison to 122's)
Where I differ is the 140's. They offer the simple mechanicals of the 120's but with some upgrades, mainly rear discs and a better booster. Also better outward visibility, a stronger structure( I believe) and a ton of trunk space. Of course he is right the 122's have a more charming vintage look.
The 5444's I've never had so I can't speak for them.
In the end the best choice probably comes down to the "what is the best car, (condition wise) you can find at the time that best fills your needs." i.e. a great 122 is better than a rusty beat up 142 and a perfect 1800 is no good if it is over your budget and you can't fir your family or stuff in it.
