green DOT4 brake fluid

No, my post was not meant to cause paranoia. My guess is that seals in 1950's and '60 British cars were vulnerable to the DOT3 (if the ratings even existed then). DOT4 came about with the common use of disc brakes. I've always used Castrol GT fluid (DOT4) in my many Volvos (all RWD models) without any related problems whatsoever. -- Dave
