Have you checked your voltage between coil + and a bare spot on the block?
Does it show 12-14 volts right up until the engine cuts out?
1.5 ohms is a 12v coil, 3 ohms is a 9v that requires a ballast resistor to run. (Or it's the other way around, I need to find my meter to check!)
The typical way coils die is by leaving the key on without the engine running, the coil boils and will leak oil. 2nd way is by being overtightened.
The ignition switch or fusebox are places to look.(does a P1800 have a fuse for the coil?) 12volts/1.5ohms=8amps, that's alot for a switch. I don't know what the actual current draw is when running.
