Matt (almost called you Rich) I looked at that thread and agree with the response questioning you calling the car Rich. Quite a lot of BS in there too.
Now that you have a working ECU in the car, why don't you clean up the grounds at the fuel rail, get a spare AMM and run it some to test it, and if you're still unsure of the car's performance, and your boy doesn't fix cars yet, give him your "good" car and keep the 89 for yourself as he goes back to school.
My thoughts? 27 mpg isn't that rich.
