First, you don't need to remove any covers to replace the pump, just slack off the alternator and remove the fan pulley.

FWIW, neither 50K on the belt or 65K on the pump is any reason to change either one.

I'd certainly change ALL the belts and hoses on the '84[don't forget the @#1#?%$% heater hoses, both inside and out] at that age, they're orders of manitude more trouble than water pumps.

BTW, where is the middle of the Mojave desert? Kramer's Junction, or closer to Barstow?
