/// Don's post is excellent but there is one other problem that can be fixed. If there is a valve spring broken near one end the valve will just stand open. If the spring were say broken in half then the valve could drop and it would be bent by the piston.

If this were the case you can do the rope trick, pull the camshaft, spacers, retaining lock on the valve, and replace the spring. The rope trick involves feeding soft nylon rope into the sparkplug hole and holding the vlave up with the piston/rope combination.

Don's solution of the holed piston or burned valve are the most likely. Only a large opening will totally stop air compression. Let us know what you find.
