As ususal, Pete's right.

I ran onto it in about 1979 when I put a B20 in my 67 122 (Li'l Red).

If I remember right, I was able to provisionally put some big bolts

through what amounted to a half hole. The previous shield (not as

sturdy as the plate between the carbs and manifold) was nothing more

than a cover and had no reinforcing function.

When you are pulling 225 horsepower out of your engine, the reinforcing

bracket will be important to prevent warping your bellhousing between

the tranny and where the bolts enter the block. (BTW on 8-bolt

engines, those bolts are M12-1.75 as opposed to the 7/16-13 UNC)
