This plate is very important, as is the boot around the clutch fork. I recently helped a friend pull a B20 that we thought has seized. Turns out his mechanic welded up a break on the fork (and he was missing the boot) with the belhousing still on the car, letting chunks of slag enter the bellhousing. A piece about the size and shape of a nickle had found its way between the bellhousing and the ring gear.. the good news was that then engine wasn't really siezed... the bad news was he hadn't driven the car in months, saving up for the rebuild he thought he was going to have to perform.
