Actually, as an aside, I just re-read your original post...

Regarding parts prices, the parts for a Miata cost about twice what the prices for a Volvo do! (Almost had a heart attack the first time I gave my miata a simple tune up...) So fear not! (Brake pads, for instance, can usually be had for under $20...)
