If the wire was pulled tight to begin with you may not have the slack to expose the end and solder a new connection on. I would get a section of wire that is the same gauge and solder it to the original wire. Use heat shrink tubing to protect the new joint. Solder a new eye of the correct size onto the end of the spliced in piece and you should be good to go.
