I may try one of the Assenmacher stud removers: the sockets that fit over the stud and jam when applied, then can be backed out. That would fit perfectly. That's if I can get one around here. Snap On has a similar device and they sell them separately for each size($$$). I am a little leery of the tiny punch trick there: one slip and you score the cam. I assume you mean hitting the stud off-center with the punch in a small notch in the stud.
We'll have a go at this on Tuesday and make a machine-shop decision by Tuesday evening.
