Did you just unscrew and replace the voltage regulator, or resolder the alternator brushes? Which one?

I was just digging through the 700/900 FAQ under "Engine Electrical", doing some research, when I noticed some info on batteries, alternators and voltage regulators causing poor gas mileage. I am curious to know exactly what was done.
