I like D.P.'s advice, but if my '89 245 was doing what yours is I'd get it fixed before leaving, because the Mrs. wouldn't go for an SUV, or anything other than her '89. Probably some preconceived notions of safety...
I would do these three things before leaving, if the actual trouble cannot be reproduced in diagnosis:
1) Resolder or replace the fuel pump relay.
2) Inspect, clean or replace the 25A fuse under the hood.
3) Replace the RPM sensor.
As I've already done 1&2, and have 3 stocked as a spare, the job would be 3.
The sensor job is marginally DIY in this way; if (I hear) you break the bracket it is bolted to, the transmission must be dropped.
