Al makes good points, and don't forget the ground side of the whole system.
Assuming your Delco unit has an integral regulator, the alternator casing has to be well grounded to the body. Also, I would take this opportunity to remove and clean both ends of each ground cable-battery to body, and body to engine.
Maybe it's just a bad alternator? It's acting like it may have lost one loop of the stator??
