Sounds like the gear position sensor switch. You can pull the codes on it and see what the codes say. You can try running the gearshift rapidly through the gear positions (put your foot on the brake, hold the gear shift button in with your thumb, without the engine running) five or ten times and see if that clears it up temporarily.
