What Kind Of Alignment is Needed? 700 1991

"What kind of wheel alignment is needed and/or called for this car?"

In my opinion all that is needed is a two wheel alignment, but even doing a two wheel alignment a good shop will check to make sure to rear axle is not bent. The rear axle was bent on my wife's car, and I replaced it after alignement.

"I recently got this a 4 wheel alignment at NTB. They used a good Hunter alignment machine. However, the only thing they adjusted for, and the only thing that is adjustable based on Haynes and Chilton, is the toe. No camber or caster adjustment can be done. Please also note that on the front wheels can be adjusted for toe. Nothing can be adjusted for the back wheels."

Castor can be adjusted, although slightly, by moving the top of the strut fore and aft in the slotted holes in the strut tow of the chassis. Major changes in castor are made with the different length radius rods as previously mentioned. Volvo has a service bulletin for adjusting the camber by slotting the rear strut mount hole.

"Hince my question. If the front toe is the only thing that is adjustable, then all I am getting is a front wheel alignment not a 4 wheel alignment. I talk to the manager and he said that per his manual, this car calls for a 4 wheel alignment even though the only thing that is adjustable on this car is the front toe."

The industry often uses this argument to support higher charges even though they can't do a four wheel alignment. I take our cars to the best alignment shop (that I know of) in Portland, Oregon. All they do is alignement and frame repair. The manager agrees with me (and you) in that all is needed for alignment on our live rear axle cars is a front wheel alignment. The Line Up Shop on NE 102nd in Portland will not charge for a four wheel alignment on our 740 cars. This shop does lots of custom work and race car work besides the very day stuff. The local Les Schwab tire shop aligned the same car about two years previous and charged my wife for a four wheel alignment. The Les Schwab shop missed the bent rear axle completely. We were charged for something they didn't do. The Line Up Shop noticed the bent rear axle doing their ordinary checks on a two wheel alignment.

"I called a local Volvo dealer and they also stated that a 4 wheel alignment is called for this car even though the only thing that is adjustable is the front toe."

Ask them how they can justify a four wheel alignment on a car which has no adjustments on the rear axle and suspension. Do they have your car confused with an IRS model?

If you had a 760 series with independant rear suspension, I can understand the need for a four wheel alignment even though I am not familiar with the adjustments that can be made to the independant rear suspension.
