Idle Problems 200 1981

Details, details. What engine/ignition combo do you have? B21? B28? Bosch ignition? Chrysler ignition?

What have you checked/done so far?

Your best bet would be to do a nice, complete tune-up. If not done recently replace the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and o2 sensor ($60 if you play your cards right). Then set/check the idle speed (CIS disabled, then enabled), fuel mixture (ideally with an exhaust gas analyzer), and timing. And then replace all the vacuum hoses and ensure that your idle motor isn't gummed up (very cheap, but time consuming).

If you're still getting problems, I would suspect a CIS fault, gummed up CPR, or something else faulty with the cold enrichment. If the idle motor or anything in the intake tract was gummed up, your warm-up regulator may be too.

CIS suggestions:

Keep in mind that for the 81, you need to actually disconnect the CIS computer (engine/ignition off) to set the base idle (nothing to ground like the 82+ CIS computers). With CIS deactivated you should set the idle to 850 (Bosch) or 700 (Chrysler). With CIS activated (again plug it in with the engine OFF), the idle should rise to 850-950 (Bosch) or 700-800 (Chrysler).

Also, before you go fiddling, if you've replaced any parts make sure they're the right parts (81 was an odd year). ECU should be an 003 (Bosch ignition) or 002 (Chrysler). Coolant temp 028, idle motor #500.

Lambda sond:

You can use a dwell meter to adjust your fuel mixture, but you'd be best off finding someone with an exhaust gas analyzer (like a shop that tunes 80s and earlier Ferraris, vintage MBZs, vintage BMWs, Saab 900Cs, VWs, etc).
