How About getting the engine quiter?? 200

Manolo,
I have the '83 244GL auto w/ aw70 tranny & only 75K miles. I hear a clatter like noise from the engine and it's louder after driving for +20 minutes. How do you check valve clearances? And would I need special tools and could a home mech w/ med skill experience do the job?
